St Ann Man kills elderly farmer with stone because ‘his eyes were red like the devil’
The accused man, 21-year-old Andre Hewitt of Cascade in Cave Valley, is charged with the murder of 75-year-old Octavious Reid, also of Cascade, St Ann.
Allegations are that on December 12 last year, at about 11:30 am, Reid was walking along the road with a machete in his hand. Hewitt was also walking along the said road.
Further allegations are that Hewitt later flung several stones at Reid, which resulted in his death.
Hewitt was later arrested and charged for murder following investigations.
When cautioned, Hewitt reportedly told the police officer that, on the day in question, the deceased man’s eyes “looked red like a devil”, so he flung the stones at him. There were no further details of the “devil eyes” allegations in court on Tuesday.
A psychiatric evaluation ordered for Hewitt revealed that he was fit to be pleaded and to stand trial. His attorney, Vincent Wellesley later made a bail application on his behalf where he stated that the prosecution was alleging that his client used a stone to beat Reid to death. However, Wellesley said that Hewitt has maintained that he flung stones in self-defense, because Reid had a machete. The attorney said that his client had no previous convictions, he was not of flight risk and was a worthy candidate for bail. He again alluded to the fact that self-defense was being raised.
Parish Judge Peter Wilson later granted Hewitt bail in the sum of $800,000 with up to four sureties. As a condition of his bail, he is to report to the Ocho Rios police station on Fridays between the hours of 6 am to 6 pm.
Hewitt is also to reside in Great Pond in Ocho Rios with his brother and is not to return to the community of Cascade, where the murder occurred due to concerns for his safety.
In the meantime, a post-mortem report remains outstanding on the file and the case was set for mention on March 31.
